Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)

Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) consists of a flux-coated electrode, which is used to conduct current from the electrode holder to the metals being welded. This electrode has two functions: it vaporizes to become a shielding gas when the arc melts the flux, this helps to avoid the weld from contaminating; the arc will melt the electrode as well, making it a part of the welding substance, this will make it even stronger.

SMAW utilizes simple equipment, along with numerous filler metals, which makes it suitable for various metals with different thicknesses. This simple and versatile method is very common and reliable. Common applications of SMAW include ship-building, pressure vessel fabrication, and other repair projects.

Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)

In this procedure, the electrode does not melt and will not become part of the welding mixture. An arc will form between the electrode and the metal. To prevent contamination, a shielding gas is used. The welder adds a thin wire of filler metal to the weld pool, which will form at the base metal. GTAW needs special skill and it creates accurate and tidy welds.

The aircraft industry introduced GTAW during 1930s to 1940s. It is still widely used in the construction sector, for airplanes and other transportation methods. Aluminium and other alloys are now being used to lower the weight and fuel consumption of airplanes, and other types of vehicles. And GTAW suits these materials a lot in terms of accuracy or precision, which is why GTAW is also used in building sports cars. About 95% of NASCAR sports cars are treated with manual welding using the GTAW method. This procedure is utilized in the construction of pipes for petroleum and chemical industries.
