How to tell between a good and a bad weld?

How to tell between a good and a bad weld?

Welding requires professional skill and ample scientific knowledge and it comes with a number of various welding methods, which have different uses. Some of its uses include Trailer Weld and Vehicle Steel Welding in Houston and other areas etc. It is very important to choose the right method to ensure reliability and strength of the project.

Although a bad weld can be recognized through a number of specific tests, the physical appearance of the weld can also be used for the same purpose. You can utilize the methods given below to ensure accuracy and durability of a welding project.

For MIG Welding:

Look for the following signs to recognize a bad weld:

• It should not be thinner than about 1/8th of an inch.
• There is a lack of uniformity.
• The bead easily breaks down at the middle.
• Parent metal with a lack in discolouration.

For TIG Welding:

Look for the following signs to recognize a bad weld:

• Penetration not deep enough at the bottom of the weld.
• There is a large number of metal globules.
• Noticeably reduced or increased size of the weld.
• Fusion not entirely finished.
• Visible pores or cracks.
• Signs of overlapping or undercutting.

For Arc Welding:

Look for the following signs to recognize a bad weld:

• There is an extra amount of spatter.
• Signs of undercut.
• Visible cracks.
• Incomplete fusion.

For Oxy Welding:

Look for the following signs to recognize a bad weld:

• Underside lacking proper penetration.
• There is an excess of metal globules.
• The weld has a significantly lowered or increased size.
• Check for undercutting or overlapping.
• Fusion not finished completely.
• Pores or cracks formed.

Wrongly done welding methods can cause major flaws in the welding project. But once the problem is recognized, it can be fixed with the help of professional welders.

What should be done in case of a bad weld?

It is very important to make sure that your welding project is free of flaws, otherwise it may pose a safety risk. In case of a bad weld, the welders should be contacted again and asked to re-do the procedure. In case the weld is so bad, that all you can do is grind it out. Adding more filler can loosen the area next to the weld, so the welding procedure should be performed with proper care to lower not done correctly.
